Esquel and Los Alerces · The southern Lake District

Esquel and Los Alerces

Steam rises from a narrow-gauge train. Clear water runs beneath a forest bridge. In the next valley, a mill and a vineyard tell different chapters of the same working landscape.

A region with more than one centre

Old forest. Living history.

Esquel is a useful base because several different journeys begin nearby. La Trochita heads out across open country; Los Alerces leads west into lakes and forest; Trevelin brings mills, Welsh cultural history and a productive valley into the visit. Together they make a southern Lake District chapter with its own identity. Four or five nights allow those contrasts to develop. Choose accommodation for the evenings and outings you want: Esquel for town services and the railway, Trevelin for the valley, or a park stay for more immediate time by the water. A day trip reaches part of Los Alerces, but the whole park is too extensive to treat as one stop.

  1. 01
Give the park more than a photograph

Los Alerces protects old-growth forest as well as beautiful water. Short shoreside walks, a lake navigation and a longer hike are different experiences. Select the sector and activity before deciding how much time the visit needs.

  2. 02
Keep a day for the railway and its destination

La Trochita's Esquel excursion reaches Nahuel Pan, a Mapuche–Tehuelche community. The station stop has its own cultural interest. Choose a confirmed departure and leave time around the train for Esquel, rather than attaching it to an already full park day.

  3. 03
Use Trevelin as a cultural and food chapter

The former flour mills, Welsh tea tradition and newer vineyards add depth to the valley. Choose a museum and a producer or meal that interest you. The route becomes more satisfying when you follow a story, rather than attempting every advertised attraction.

La Trochita and Nahuel Pan

Follow the little railway.

La Trochita has reached Esquel since 1945. Its small carriages and 75-centimetre gauge give the journey an intimate scale, with the working machinery as much a part of the experience as the landscape. The usual Esquel excursion runs to Nahuel Pan, where the train prepares for its return. This is the home of a Mapuche–Tehuelche community, not a station built solely as a visitor attraction. The Museo de Culturas Originarias and Casa de las Artesanas add context through local history and handmade work. Confirm departure and check-in information with La Trochita’s Esquel station before travelling, and use the official La Trochita ticket site. Confirm which community visits are operating with your departure, and spend the stop on shore as thoughtfully as the ride.

  1. 01
    Book the actual excursion

Confirm the departure, return and operating arrangements with the railway before building the rest of the day. A photograph of the historic train does not establish that it runs on every date. Leave a useful margin before the next commitment.

  2. 02
    Take the community stop seriously

Where open, the museum and artisan space offer more than a quick souvenir purchase. Ask before photographing people, look at the textiles and other work, and use the stop to learn something about the place the railway connects.

Los Alerces National Park

Enter a slower measure of time.

The park takes its name from the alerce, or lahuán, a long-lived native tree that gives the protected forest its exceptional character. The ancient groves reached by a lake excursion are different from the Lahuán Solitario walk. That shorter outing crosses the Río Arrayanes footbridge and follows the water towards the Puerto Chucao area; it offers an accessible introduction to the forest without being the same visit as the millennial alerzal. Around Villa Futalaufquen, shoreside paths and the rock-art walk provide other ways into the park. Use Los Alerces visitor information to choose one coherent sector for a day and allow time to notice the trees, water and changing light.

  1. 01
    Distinguish the two alerce visits

If the ancient grove is your main aim, confirm the operating navigation, landing and included walk before booking. Seeing an individual alerce beside a shorter trail is worthwhile, but it does not reproduce that fuller forest excursion.

  2. 02
Use the current park access information

The park announced a staged reopening after the 2026 fires. Conditions differ by sector, road, trail and service. Confirm the specific places in your plan with the park; do not infer that every northern route is available because another has reopened.

Mills, vines and Welsh tea

Follow the valley to the table.

Trevelin's cultural visits make more sense beside its productive landscape. The Museo Regional Molino Andes occupies a former flour mill, while Nant Fach recreates a working milling tradition farther along the Ruta Galesa. These are different places, worth choosing for the part of the story that interests you. Tea houses carry another strand of Welsh heritage into the present through cakes, breads and an unhurried service. Newer vineyards add a more recent chapter. A museum in the morning and a reserved winery visit or tea in the afternoon make a satisfying day without turning the valley into a checklist.

  1. 01
    Choose one mill, then linger

Molino Andes gives the town's history a setting inside an original industrial building. Nant Fach is a working reconstruction and museum on the rural route. Visiting both can reward a strong interest in the subject; otherwise choose one and leave time for the town.

  2. 02
Make the tasting a real appointment

Confirm the winery's visit and meal arrangements directly. The view and a glass of wine are more enjoyable when the timing, transport and designated driver are already settled. A Welsh tea works equally well as the day's slower final stop.

Build a varied southern stay

Three landscapes. Enough days.

Town, valley and national park are close enough to combine across a stay, but each deserves time of its own.

01

Four or five nights

Give the three chapters a day each.

Use an arrival afternoon for Esquel, then keep separate days for the railway, Los Alerces and Trevelin. A fifth night adds a second park day or room to move an excursion. If the ancient alerce grove is essential, secure that outing first and place the more flexible town visits around it.

  • Avoid pairing a full lake navigation with the railway.
  • Extend a park stay when walking is the main reason for coming.
02

Choosing the address

Match the base to your evenings.

Esquel offers a town setting and convenient railway access. Trevelin suits a stronger emphasis on rural visits, mills and meals in the valley. Staying within Los Alerces brings the forest and water closer, but the chosen property and sector determine transport and services. Compare the specific address rather than treating every park lodge as interchangeable.

  • A split stay is useful when it reduces repeated driving.
  • Keep enough nights at each address to justify moving.
03

Short park walks

Choose a particular piece of shoreline.

The Villa Futalaufquen area includes a lakeside route towards Puerto Limonao and a separate visit to rock art and a viewpoint. Cascada Irigoyen adds a waterfall option beside the road corridor. These make good building blocks for a day, with different starting points and distances. Confirm the current path, then choose a few stops with time between them.

  • The rock-art shelter is a cultural site: observe without touching.
  • Obtain the current route information at the park centre.
04

A lighter town day

Find the forest–steppe edge at La Zeta.

Laguna La Zeta is a municipal natural reserve above Esquel, where the transition between forest and open country becomes part of the outing. It offers a useful local walking and birdwatching alternative to another longer transfer. Choose an established route and the conditions of the day. If the lagoon is frozen, appreciate the scene from the shore.

  • Use the reserve's current map and permitted activity information.
  • A short outing leaves the rest of the day for the town.
05

Seasonal choices

Do not use one itinerary year-round.

Warmer months suit a broader choice of lake and forest outings. Autumn brings changing colour, while winter can shift the focus towards snow activities around La Hoya and town-based visits. Trevelin's famous tulip displays are seasonal agricultural attractions, not a permanent landscape. Confirm their actual flowering and visitor arrangements before making them the reason for the trip.

  • Snow activities need their own transport and operating checks.
  • Keep a museum or town meal available for a poor outdoor day.
06

The park's scale

Separate easy outings from mountain routes.

The park also contains longer and more demanding routes, including Cerro Cocinero and the Krugger area. A short lakeshore walk does not prepare the same itinerary as a full mountain day or an overnight journey. Select the route with the park, complete any required registration and check the specific access after the fires. Add nights when that larger walk matters.

  • Do not assume a reopened road means every trail beside it is open.
  • Continue north to El Bolsón with a separate travel day.

The southern lakes deserve their own chapter

Stay for the changing landscape.

A railway morning, a forest walk and a meal in the valley belong in the same journey. Give each its own time, then continue through the lakes with a clearer sense of what makes this end different.
