Two domestic flight days

A focused first journey

Two places. A proper introduction.

This route is for a first visit with seven calendar days from arrival to departure. Buenos Aires supplies the architecture, cafés and evening life; Iguazú supplies the change in scale and the sound of water in the forest. Day 1 is an arrival day, not a full sightseeing day, and Day 7 is for the international departure. That leaves one full city day and two full days based in Puerto Iguazú, with the flights between them. The balance is intentional. You could spend much longer in Buenos Aires, but the falls deserve more than a few hours fitted around an airport transfer. Keep the final city night so a domestic flight delay does not immediately become a missed international connection.

  1. 01
    Who this suits

Travellers who want a short introduction to city life and a major natural highlight, and who are comfortable taking two domestic flights within a week.

  2. 02
    What the week leaves out

There is no additional Patagonia, Mendoza or Iberá chapter. The Brazilian side of the falls is an optional use of the spare regional day, with separate border and transport preparation.

  3. 03
    When to rethink it

If your flights arrive late on Day 1 or depart early on Day 7, the plan still counts those as travel days. If you have fewer calendar days, choose one base rather than compressing the same route.

Days 1–2 · Buenos Aires

Begin on the city streets.

Choose one Buenos Aires accommodation base for both opening nights. Monserrat and the historic centre make a natural first full day: Plaza de Mayo introduces the city's civic history, while Avenida de Mayo brings cafés, domes and façades into the walk westward. A visit inside a major building should be an actual booking or opening-hours decision, not an assumed extra. If architecture is the priority, build the afternoon around a reserved Teatro Colón tour. If markets and older streets interest you more, continue towards San Telmo instead. Keeping one main direction leaves time to sit down for lunch, look above the shopfronts and return to the accommodation without a race across the city.

  1. 01
Day 1 · Arrive and settle

Transfer to the accommodation, have something to eat nearby and make a short neighbourhood walk if energy and daylight allow. Confirm the Day 3 airport transfer. A late dinner or performance is optional, not something the arrival day must achieve.

  2. 02
    Day 2 · Choose a city chapter

Spend the morning around Plaza de Mayo and Avenida de Mayo, then choose the booked cultural visit or San Telmo. Leave the evening for a meal. A tango show can fit if its timing suits the next day's flight; it need not be added after an already long day.

Days 3–5 · Puerto Iguazú

Give the water a whole day.

Stay three nights in Puerto Iguazú so the Argentine park day sits between two ordinary nights rather than between flights. Decide how you will reach the park and return before the morning of the visit. The park contains several different circuits: the Garganta del Diablo approach and upper viewpoints give a different perspective from the lower circuit, which includes stairs. Current openings, weather and your own mobility should determine the sequence. Keep time for the walkways, pauses and the journey within the park; trying to add every activity changes the character of the day. A boat excursion has its own booking, conditions and physical requirements. It is an optional separate experience, not part of ordinary park admission by default.

  1. 01
    Day 3 · Fly north

Travel from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazú and settle into the accommodation. If the arrival leaves usable time, make a modest town outing or arrange dinner. Do not promise a park visit before seeing the flight schedule and the park's current entry conditions.

  2. 02
Day 4 · Visit the Argentine park

Devote the day to the falls. Prioritise the viewpoints that matter most and choose the other circuits around current access and your pace. Carry the essentials for heat, rain and an extended outdoor visit. Return to town without adding a second distant attraction.

  3. 03
    Day 5 · Keep a useful choice

Use the day for another park visit under the current admission rules, a locally arranged forest outing or a quieter town day. The Brazilian side is possible only if your documents and transport are resolved; crossing the border is not an automatic part of this itinerary.

Days 6–7 · Back in Buenos Aires

Return before the last day.

The return to Buenos Aires is part of the route, not a spare sightseeing day waiting to be filled. Choose the last night's accommodation with both airports in mind: where the domestic flight lands and where the international service departs. Reusing the first hotel can simplify luggage and orientation, but an accommodation decision should still fit the actual timings. If the flight arrives early enough, the reward is a final neighbourhood meal or a short walk near the hotel. There is no need to recover all the city sights missed at the beginning. A calm final evening is a better use of a small opening than a cross-city reservation that depends on every part of the flight day running exactly on time.

  1. 01
Day 6 · Fly back to the capital

Leave Puerto Iguazú, return to Buenos Aires and sleep in the city. Confirm the next day's transfer and airline check-in requirements. Treat any sightseeing as a bonus determined by the actual arrival, luggage arrangements and energy left.

  2. 02
    Day 7 · Depart

Make the airport journey for the international flight. If departure is late, keep any morning activity close to the accommodation and allow for luggage collection. This remains the departure day, even when there is time for a final coffee.

Make the week work

The decisions behind the route.

Book the shape of the journey first: international flights, regional flights and the six accommodation nights. Then place the park visit and any timed city experience inside it.

01

Nights

Book six, in the right order

Reserve Buenos Aires for Nights 1 and 2, Puerto Iguazú for Nights 3, 4 and 5, then Buenos Aires for Night 6. Overnight flying before arrival is outside this count. A very early arrival may require an extra hotel night if immediate room access matters.

  • Buenos Aires: 2 + 1 nights.
  • Puerto Iguazú: 3 nights.
02

Airports

Read the full airport name

Buenos Aires flights can use different airports. Check the codes on both domestic tickets and the international booking, then plan the ground journeys explicitly. The final overnight reduces connection pressure but cannot guarantee protection from every disruption.

  • Confirm arrival and departure airports.
  • Keep the last city night.
03

Season

Prepare for the regional conditions

Iguazú is an outdoor visit in a subtropical setting. Heat, humidity, rain and changing river conditions affect the day differently from Buenos Aires weather. Place the most important park visit on the first full regional day, leaving the second as a useful alternative.

  • Pack for rain and warm-weather walking.
  • Use the spare day with purpose.
04

Access

Choose circuits you can enjoy

A park day does not require every walkway. Compare stairs, distances, transport within the park and any assistance needs before choosing the sequence. A separate boat trip may have restrictions that do not apply to the ordinary viewpoint circuits.

  • Ask about current circuit access.
  • Confirm needs with the operator before booking.
05

Border option

Keep Brazil optional

The route works entirely in Argentina. If you want the Brazilian side on Day 5, check the entry requirements that apply to your passport, re-entry to Argentina, transfer arrangements and the separate park booking. Leave it out if those steps make the short visit less comfortable.

  • Resolve documents before committing.
  • Count border travel as part of the day.
06

A different week

Change the regional chapter

If waterfalls are not the priority, do not force Iguazú into the trip. Use the city guide for a Buenos Aires stay with nearby outings, or consider a Mendoza-focused week with suitable flights. Those are alternatives to this route, not additional destinations inside it.

  • Give the chosen places enough time.
  • Save a third region for another journey.

Leave with an appetite to return

One week can be enough to begin.

You will leave more of Buenos Aires unseen than seen. That is a reason to return, not a reason to rush the final night. Give the first visit its own shape and let the next journey begin with what stayed with you.
