Seven days in the Northeast

The rush. Then the stillness.

One full Iguazú park day, two full days in the Iberá wetlands and the transfers they really need: a seven-day regional journey from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas.

Two landscapes, one considered journey

Water changes the pace.

Begin in Puerto Iguazú on Day 1 and spend two nights there, giving the Argentine falls a full day. Day 3 is reserved for the journey to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, where three nights support two full wetland days. Return to Posadas on Day 6, sleep there and leave on Day 7. The six-night count is deliberate: a final gateway night keeps a remote, weather-sensitive road transfer separate from the onward flight. This is a regional itinerary with different arrival and departure points, not a round trip from Buenos Aires within seven days. It also assumes that suitable private transfers are confirmed before the accommodation is booked. If those journeys do not work on your dates, add time or choose one region rather than forcing the two together.

  1. 01
Give the falls one complete day

The default plan visits the Argentine park. A Brazilian-side visit needs its own time, entry preparation and border crossing; add a day if you want both sides without taking one from Iberá.

  2. 02
    Choose the exact wetland base

This route uses Colonia Carlos Pellegrini and the Laguna Iberá area. Iberá's other portals have different gateways and experiences; a room described simply as 'Iberá' is not enough information to book the transfers.

  3. 03
    Book the difficult journey first

Ask a suitable local operator or the accommodation to confirm the Puerto Iguazú–Pellegrini and Pellegrini–Posadas journeys, including the route, vehicle and rain policy. A bus to a nearby city does not complete the rural access.

Days 1–2 · Puerto Iguazú and the falls

Hear the forest change.

Arrive in Puerto Iguazú with the first evening kept simple. A town base gives access to meals and the practical details of the next day's park journey; accommodation farther into the forest changes the pickup and evening transport. Make Day 2 a full Argentine park visit. The Upper Circuit, Lower Circuit and Garganta del Diablo offer different perspectives, but current access, train arrangements, weather and your pace should decide the order. Do not judge the day by whether you complete every path. Stop to notice the forest between viewpoints, and leave enough time for the return transport. A river excursion is a separate, optional activity with its own conditions, not something included in a general park ticket or required to make the falls worthwhile.

  1. 01
Day 1 · Arrive in Puerto Iguazú

Reach the accommodation, arrange the park transfer and have dinner without a tight evening schedule. If the arrival leaves time for the riverfront, keep it local. Confirm the Day 3 driver and the wetland accommodation before the journey begins.

  2. 02
Day 2 · Argentine Iguazú National Park

Take the full day for the park, choosing circuits around current opening conditions and your mobility. Keep water, food arrangements and the return pickup in the plan. A second country and border crossing do not belong in this already complete day.

Day 3 · From Misiones to Iberá

Give the journey its day.

Leave Puerto Iguazú for Colonia Carlos Pellegrini with the whole day reserved for travel. The northern approaches to Laguna Iberá include long sections of gravel and earth, and rain can change what is practical. The correct route is the one the accommodation and transfer provider confirm for the current conditions, not a shortcut chosen from a navigation app. Agree on luggage space, breaks, food and the arrival arrangements before setting off. The San Ignacio ruins may look tempting along part of a regional journey, but adding a substantial visit here can push the rural approach later than intended. If you want that cultural chapter, add a night with its own visiting time. Arrival in Pellegrini is for settling in, meeting the people arranging your outings and understanding the next morning's plan.

  1. 01
Before leaving · Confirm the rural approach

Recheck the road with the driver and accommodation, especially after rain. Ask where the journey will stop and how changes will be communicated where reception is limited. Keep essentials accessible rather than buried under the luggage.

  2. 02
On arrival · Settle into Pellegrini

Check in, confirm dinner and discuss the two full days of outings. A short local walk may suit an early arrival, but no boat departure is assumed that afternoon.

Days 4–7 · Wetlands, then the gateway

Let the wildlife set the rhythm.

Three Pellegrini nights make space for two different wetland days. Use a guided boat outing to understand the water, floating vegetation and the places where animals feed or rest; combine it with a land-based visit rather than repeating the same excursion automatically. Capybaras, caimans and birds are reasons to pay attention, not sightings an itinerary can promise. A guide can make a reedbed or patch of open water interesting even when the larger animals stay out of view. Rest between outings and let the available light, wind and local advice shape their timing. On Day 6, leave the wetlands for Posadas and stay overnight before the onward journey. That gateway night belongs to the plan as firmly as the wildlife days: it reduces the pressure to make a remote-road transfer meet an unforgiving flight deadline.

  1. 01
Day 4 · Water and observation

Take the agreed guided outing and let the guide choose a suitable route for conditions. Leave a pause around lunch, then choose a village or nearby land-based visit if it fits. Watch at a distance and keep food away from wildlife.

  2. 02
Day 5 · A different habitat or perspective

Choose a complementary walk, birding outing or second navigation with a different focus. Ask what the season and current water conditions make worthwhile. The aim is another layer of understanding, not a guaranteed list of species.

  3. 03
Days 6–7 · Posadas and departure

Travel to Posadas in daylight, using the route confirmed for current conditions. Settle into the final accommodation and keep the evening simple. This is a travel day, with any city walk dependent on the actual arrival. Depart on Day 7 after this overnight.

Make the connection real

Book the whole journey.

The park days are straightforward to imagine; the rural transfers decide whether the seven-day plan works. Resolve those first, then choose the excursions.

01

Nights

Keep the gateway night

Book two Puerto Iguazú nights, three in Colonia Carlos Pellegrini and one in Posadas. Arrival on Day 1 and departure on Day 7 are included. International travel before or after this regional sequence may need additional days and accommodation. Use the real flight or onward transport arrangements to set the morning. If no suitable service runs on your dates, extend the gateway stay or change the route before booking. The itinerary does not promise a particular flight connection.

  • Puerto Iguazú: Nights 1–2.
  • Pellegrini: Nights 3–5; Posadas: Night 6.
02

Transfer

Confirm both rural journeys

Arrange the Puerto Iguazú–Pellegrini transfer and the later return to Posadas as specific bookings. Ask about the actual vehicle, rain-related changes, luggage and breaks. Do not assume a standard rental car or a generic bus ticket is suitable for every access road.

03

Wetland base

Name the portal and village

Colonia Carlos Pellegrini serves the Laguna Iberá area. Cambyretá, Carambola and San Nicolás are different approaches, with different access towns. Changing the accommodation to another portal requires a new route; it is not a small change of hotel address.

  • Confirm the exact accommodation location.
  • Ask which outings depart from that base.
04

Park access

Separate the reservations

Iguazú admission, transport and optional river activities are distinct decisions. In Iberá, ask the accommodation or operator what is included in a stay and what must be booked separately. Keep current visitor information handy without relying on old prices or departure times.

  • Check current circuit availability at Iguazú.
  • Confirm the format of each wetland outing.
05

Weather

Keep the plan adaptable

Rain affects more than comfort: it can alter rural-road access, water conditions and the practical timing of outings. Pack for sun, insects and rain, and protect essential documents and electronics. Follow local advice when an outing or transfer needs to change.

  • Keep a contact plan for low-signal stretches.
  • Retain the final gateway overnight.
06

Extra day

Choose what the extra time buys

Add a day for a second falls visit, Brazilian-side preparation, San Ignacio or another wetland outing. Choose one purpose and adjust the nights accordingly. With fewer than seven regional days, one well-paced landscape can be more rewarding than two joined by rushed transfers.

  • Brazil is an additional border decision.
  • San Ignacio deserves its own visiting time.

The small details stay.

The falls announce themselves. In the wetlands, the memorable moment may be a bird holding still among the leaves. Two full days give you time to look beyond the first sighting and enjoy the place between outings.
