Buenos Aires and the Pampas
Grand avenues and small café tables. Boats slipping between islands. Horse country and the slow work of a grill. This is a region best understood at more than one pace.
Find your paceA city and its wider world
Buenos Aires is an autonomous city; the province around it stretches far beyond the capital. For a first visit, concentrate on the city, the waterways reached from Tigre, and one part of the Pampas. These places complement one another, but they do not belong in the same hurried excursion.
Our suggested starting point is four full days in Buenos Aires. That leaves room for its historic centre, contrasting neighbourhoods, cafés and one or two evenings shaped by music or theatre.
Add Tigre when you want a change of landscape without moving every night. Choose Areco or another rural base when you want the countryside to become a meaningful part of the trip.
For an island stay, confirm the dock and boat transfer. For a rural property, check the road access, meals and activities included. A destination name alone does not tell you how the day will work.

01 · Buenos Aires
Give Buenos Aires time beyond its first landmarks. San Telmo brings old façades, the market and layers of city history; Recoleta pairs monumental architecture with museums and quieter walks. Palermo offers parks, cafés and late evenings. Plan around a neighbourhood or two each day, with lunch and time on foot between the bigger visits.
Stay near the places you will return to most: cafés and restaurants, museums, or the historic centre. A convenient address matters more than treating one neighbourhood as the answer for everyone.
A tango performance, a milonga or theatre on Corrientes can be the centre of a day. Avoid filling the morning after with an early departure just because the map permits it.

02 · Tigre and the Delta
Tigre is the mainland gateway to the Paraná Delta, where waterways become routes between islands. A walk along the town's waterfront and a short boat outing give a first impression; an island stay changes the experience entirely. Decide whether you want a public sightseeing trip, an activity on the water or time at a particular island property before choosing transport.
Confirm the island landing, boat departure point, journey time, luggage arrangements and return with your host. Tigre station is only the mainland arrival.
Keep the outing separate from a tightly timed flight or city reservation. Water activities depend on weather and operator guidance; an overnight stay gives more time to settle into the river landscape.

03 · San Antonio de Areco
San Antonio de Areco gives the Pampas a human scale: a town to walk, workshops to visit and countryside beyond it. Its leather and silver craft traditions are as much a reason to come as horse riding. Spend time in town before heading to an estancia, and choose a stay for the experience it offers rather than assuming every rural property follows the same programme.
A town stay keeps you close to cafés, workshops and streets you can explore independently. An estancia suits travellers who want more time on the property, meals and organised rural activities.
Ask about riding experience, group size, equipment and alternatives for non-riders. Check which meals and transfers are included, especially if you will not have your own transport.

04 · The province at the table
Uribelarrea, in Cañuelas, makes a compact rural-food outing: regional picadas or an asado lunch, with a town walk on either side. Start around the main square and look at the neo-Gothic church facing it before settling at a table. That walk–lunch combination is a suggested way to spend the day, with the restaurant chosen separately. It offers a different emphasis from an Areco estancia and craft stay: one small town and its food, rather than a longer introduction to country life.
Choose between a regional picada of cured meats and cheeses to share and a sit-down grilled meal. The provincial guide to Uribelarrea’s regional food introduces the town's produce and picadas; it is background for choosing, not a booking service. For an asado lunch, our guide to ordering at a parrilla explains cuts, portions and sides before you order.
Confirm the chosen restaurant's service directly before departure. If you want to go inside Nuestra Señora de Luján, check that visit separately; the provincial account explains the church's setting and architecture, not its current access arrangements. A walk around the square and an unhurried lunch give this outing a clear shape without adding another country town.
