Salta, Jujuy and the Northwest
A road disappearing into cloud. A village beneath striped hills. A table that becomes an evening of music. Give the Northwest enough time for the country between its famous views.
Choose your routeCities, valleys and higher country
Salta, the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the higher Puna are different journeys within the same broad region. Begin with the city or valley that interests you most. Add another area when you can give the road between them its own time. Compare the Quebrada's village bases with the separate Calchaquí Valley journey through Cachi and Cafayate.
We suggest two or three nights in Salta, then several nights in one Quebrada base. That leaves room for a city day, village walks and a carefully chosen excursion. Arrival times matter more than simply counting nights.
Purmamarca suits time beside the coloured hills; Tilcara brings archaeology, restaurants and nearby walking into one stay. Compare your accommodation's actual position before deciding that every outing will be easy from the same address.
Salinas Grandes and Hornocal involve separate ascents beyond the village visits. Plan gradual altitude exposure and seek individual medical advice where needed. A night in Salta alone does not make someone acclimatized to the high Puna.

01 · Salta
Start around Plaza 9 de Julio, follow the colour of the historic façades and choose a museum that gives the streets more meaning. Later, make room for regional cooking and a peña. Salta earns time before the longer excursions: a full day in the city feels different from a night squeezed between two early departures.
Pair the cathedral and nearby streets with one museum, then leave room for a café. A compact plan makes it easier to return to a place that catches your attention.
Cachi and Cafayate lie on a different journey from Jujuy's Quebrada. Compare the full road route before combining them. A long excursion is not the same experience as staying in the valley.

02 · Quebrada de Humahuaca
The coloured mountains draw the eye, but the towns give the journey its shape. Choose a base, walk its streets and let the neighbouring villages become considered outings. Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca have different characters; visiting the valley does not require moving your luggage every morning.
Stay near the village centre for an easy walk to dinner, or choose a quieter address with its own transport plan. Check the approach and surroundings as carefully as the room.
The Quebrada is a UNESCO cultural landscape, shaped by long use as a route and by communities living here today. Churches, fields and settlements belong to that story alongside the geology.

03 · Tilcara
At Tilcara, the Pucará, the archaeological museum and the surrounding paths offer different ways into the valley. Interpretation matters: standing stonework includes reconstruction, and the site remains a place of significance for local Indigenous communities. Follow a heritage visit with time in the town rather than another immediate transfer.
Check the university's current visitor information and consider a guided visit. Leave time to connect the hilltop site with the archaeological museum in town.
A canyon outing needs a separate plan for weather, terrain and return transport. Ask locally about current access; a village stroll and a longer mountain walk ask different things of the day.

Begin in the valley
Compare Purmamarca and Tilcara, settle into one base and leave time for the light to change. The Quebrada guide brings the village choices together.
