A white horizon. Pools of blue. Clouds large enough to change the whole scene. Salinas Grandes rewards attention to light and texture, with a high mountain approach that deserves equal care.
The northern Salinas Grandes extends across Jujuy and Salta. From Purmamarca, Ruta Nacional 52 leads to the high-altitude salt flats reached over the Cuesta de Lipán. The highest part of that journey comes before the destination. Plan for the full route, not simply a short walk on level ground. Once there, let current local access arrangements guide how you explore a landscape that is also a place of work. See altitude and health when choosing the sequence of nights.
01
From Purmamarca
A dedicated outing gives the road, pauses and salt-flat visit room within the day. Ask about the complete departure and return rather than comparing tours only by the minutes promised on the salt.
02
From farther away
Starting in Salta or another distant base adds substantial road time. Compare the full day with moving your overnight base closer to the valley, especially when you also want to enjoy Purmamarca itself.
03
On the salt flats
Use the visitor entry and authorised local routes. Ask what is accessible that day, where you may walk and whether a guide accompanies the chosen circuit. Water, surface conditions and working areas can change the options.
Salinas Grandes · Reflective water and salt
At the salt-flat edge
Look down as well as out.
Mineral edges, shallow water and the meeting of white ground with blue sky give the salt flats their detail. Begin at the Salinas Grandes visitor parador and extraction pools: arrange the local-guided visit, see how salt is extracted and look at craftwork made from salt. Slow down within the authorised visitor area rather than assuming every white expanse is open to visitors. A wide panorama and a close look at texture reveal different sides of the same landscape.
01
Ask where to walk
Follow current local guidance around pools, extraction areas and vehicle tracks. Flat-looking ground does not establish that every surface is suitable for visitors.
02
Leave the surface intact
Photograph patterns where you find them. Avoid removing salt, altering formations or entering work areas for an angle that lies beyond the permitted route.

A landscape that changes
Let the conditions set the mood.
Dry salt and reflective water create different photographs. Neither effect is guaranteed for a particular date. Cloud, recent rain and the angle of the sun alter what you see; ask about conditions before choosing a visit specifically for reflections.
01
Protect time to look
A few considered frames can be more satisfying than rushing through a sequence of perspective tricks. Keep other visitors and working vehicles in mind.
02
Prepare for exposure
There is little shelter on open salt. Bring suitable sun protection, sunglasses, water and a layer for changing conditions. Plan pauses for comfort, not only photography.
Jujuy · The mountain road above Purmamarca
Cuesta de Lipán
The pass comes first.
The road west from Purmamarca climbs through a series of mountain bends before reaching higher, open country. Its altitude matters even if your planned activity at the destination is gentle. Keep the pace and stops appropriate to the people travelling.
01
Understand the elevation change
The pass reaches above 4,000 metres. Gradual altitude exposure is part of planning the wider journey; a quick roadside pause cannot replace acclimatization.
02
Choose suitable transport
Check weather, road conditions and the complete return. A local driver may make more sense than unfamiliar mountain driving, particularly when you want to watch the landscape.
Plan your visit
Plan more than the photo stop.
Time allowances are our editorial suggestions. Check access and transport for your dates.
01
Time and base
Reserve a separate outing.
From Purmamarca, compare a half-day description with the actual departure, stops and return. A longer outing can allow more pauses, but a longer drive from a distant city may simply mean more time in transit. Keep the village itself another part of the stay, with space for its streets and local walks.
02
Altitude
Know the highest part of the route.
The salt flats lie above 3,000 metres, and the approach from Purmamarca climbs higher still. Seek individual medical advice when relevant, and plan gradual ascent. Do not continue higher if altitude symptoms develop; worsening symptoms call for descent and medical assistance. Keep a lower alternative available rather than treating a booking as an obligation.
03
Local access
Confirm the current visitor circuit.
Arrange one of the local-guided salt-flat experiences at the visitor parador, confirming which route is open and how entry and photography stops work that day. Marked working tracks are not permission for independent visitor access. Do not drive across the salt by following another vehicle's tracks. The landscape includes extraction activity as well as visitor areas; respect instructions and keep clear of equipment and working pools.
04
Weather and photography
Avoid promising yourself a reflection.
Recent rain can change access as well as the appearance of the surface. A dry visit offers texture and a stark horizon; water may offer reflections where conditions allow. Check the forecast and local road reports, and keep your expectations flexible. The best conditions for one photograph are not automatically the best for travel.
05
What to bring
Prepare for bright, open country.
Take water, sun protection, sunglasses, a hat and layers suited to your dates. Choose footwear for the authorised outing and protect camera equipment from dust and salt. Ask your driver where breaks and facilities are available along the route, particularly when travelling with children or anyone who needs more frequent stops.
06
Linking the route
Return with enough room in the day.
Confirm where the excursion ends and how you reach your accommodation afterwards. Avoid a tight connection straight after the mountain drive. Hornocal is another high-country route rather than a nearby extra stop. If both places interest you, distribute them across a longer stay and allow how you feel to shape the sequence.
