The coloured hills and village of Purmamarca in Jujuy.
Eight days in the Northwest
Colour. Culture. Time.
Two nights in Salta, two in Purmamarca, two in Tilcara and a final Salta night: a northern journey that gives the towns as much attention as the hills.
This eight-calendar-day route starts and ends in Salta, including arrival on Day 1 and departure on Day 8. Two city nights give you a full day before continuing to Purmamarca for two nights, then Tilcara for two more. Return to Salta on Day 7 and stay there before the flight. The journey follows the Quebrada de Humahuaca as a cultural landscape: towns, markets, places of worship and archaeological interpretation belong alongside the famous colours. It does not attempt to add Cafayate, Cachi and the high Puna to the same week. Staying at different elevations in this order also avoids making the highest viewpoint the first day's goal, although no itinerary can guarantee that an individual will adjust comfortably to altitude.
01
Choose the northern journey
This is Salta plus Jujuy's valley towns. If wine and the Calchaquí valleys are the main draw, choose a different regional route rather than bolting them onto these eight days.
02
Keep two nights in each valley base
A second night gives Purmamarca and Tilcara an evening and a full day. It also avoids treating their markets and public spaces as brief stops between long drives.
03
Leave the highest excursions optional
The standard route does not require Salinas Grandes or Hornocal. Both add a distinct high-elevation journey. Review your health and current conditions before choosing one, and replace another outing instead of extending a packed day.

01
Salta
Nights 1–2 · Arrival and a full city day.
02
Purmamarca
Nights 3–4 · Village life and the coloured hills.
03
Tilcara
Nights 5–6 · Archaeology and a valley outing.
04
Salta
Night 7 · Return before the Day 8 departure.
The interior of a church in Salta.
Days 1–2 · Salta
Give the city a full day.
Salta's centre is a good place to begin reading the region before driving into it. Around Plaza 9 de Julio, the cathedral and Cabildo establish a civic and religious setting; a walk towards San Francisco brings another architectural encounter. Choose one museum for a proper visit rather than moving through several without time to absorb them. MAAM introduces high-mountain archaeology and has sensitive human-remains displays, while the Güemes museum takes the day towards regional independence history. The city's food and music deserve time too. A peña can be a reason to stay out for the evening, with regional cooking and folk music rather than an assumed tango programme. Keep the first night flexible after travel and use the second for the more deliberate evening plan.
01
Day 1 · Arrive in Salta
Reach the accommodation, take a short walk nearby and choose an uncomplicated dinner. Confirm transport north before turning the evening into a late night. The journey from the airport and the actual arrival time belong in this first day.
02
Day 2 · Architecture, a museum and music
Walk the central streets and give one museum its full visit. Add the Cerro San Bernardo outlook if conditions and energy suit, or spend more time with the city. Reserve a peña or restaurant that matches your interest and its current programme.
Market stalls and mountain scenery on a Purmamarca street.
Days 3–4 · Purmamarca
Stay after the day visitors.
Travel north through Jujuy and turn towards Purmamarca, keeping the arrival afternoon for the village itself. Around the square, Santa Rosa de Lima and the market stalls make a different kind of visit from a viewpoint above the roofs. Ask about the craftwork that interests you and respect any restrictions on photography inside places of worship or around people. On the full day, the Paseo de los Colorados offers a way to see the folded hills from changing angles. Confirm local access and conditions, choose a comfortable time and carry what you need for an exposed walk. Return for lunch rather than automatically continuing over the high pass towards the salt flats. Two nights let you notice the changing light and ordinary village rhythms without making every hour an excursion.
01
Day 3 · Move into the Quebrada
Make the Salta–Purmamarca transfer in daylight. A stop in San Salvador de Jujuy can fit a private journey if planned, but is not assumed in a bus connection. Settle in, walk the square and keep the afternoon light.
02
Day 4 · Purmamarca and Los Colorados
Choose the village and coloured-hill walk as the main plan, subject to current access and how you feel. Leave time for lunch, local shops and another look at the hills. A high salt-flat excursion is an alternative day, not an extra afternoon requirement.
Stonework at the Pucará de Tilcara archaeological site.
Days 5–6 · Tilcara and the valley
Read the stone. Meet the town.
Move to Tilcara for two nights and use it as a lived-in base rather than a place to park between viewpoints. The Pucará needs interpretation: the site includes reconstruction, and its visible structures should not all be read as untouched ancient remains. Pair it with the university's museum or botanical garden when the current visiting arrangements allow. The following day can continue to Humahuaca for its central streets, church setting and Independence Monument, returning to Tilcara to sleep. Hornocal is a separate, much higher excursion, not the automatic conclusion of a town visit. Travellers who prefer to keep the elevation lower can spend the day in Tilcara and the nearer valley instead. Food, craftwork and a quiet evening are part of the reason for the second night, not consolation activities after a missed mountain.
01
Day 5 · Tilcara and the Pucará
Travel from Purmamarca, leave luggage and make the archaeological visit around the current opening and ticket arrangements. Add one complementary cultural stop, then give the town an evening rather than driving on again.
02
Day 6 · Humahuaca, or a nearer day
Visit Humahuaca if the journey and elevation suit, leaving enough daylight for the return. Keep Hornocal outside the default plan. If you choose a nearer day, use Tilcara's cultural places and a locally advised walk suited to present conditions.
Return to Salta on Day 7 instead of combining a long valley transfer with the Day 8 flight. The descent changes the landscape again, and the final city night gives you a familiar place for dinner and departure preparations. A private transfer may allow a short, agreed stop, but the day should remain a journey with a clear end rather than a new circuit of attractions. Check the actual departure airport before booking: this example uses Salta, and a flight from Jujuy would require a different final-night decision. If you have more time, extend the valley stay or add a separate southern chapter; do not squeeze a Cafayate return drive into the last free afternoon. The most useful spare time here is the time that keeps the departure straightforward.
01
Day 7 · Tilcara to Salta
Travel back, return the rental car if appropriate and settle into the final accommodation. Use any remaining hours close to the hotel. Confirm the airport journey and leave the evening free of a demanding excursion.
02
Day 8 · Depart
Leave according to the real flight and check-in requirements. A later departure may allow breakfast and a short walk; keep luggage collection, traffic and the airport transfer in the same plan.
The seven-night count and the northern sequence are deliberate. Adjust the ambitious outing before sacrificing the full town days or the final airport margin.
01
Nights
Book the seven-night sequence
Reserve Salta for Nights 1–2, Purmamarca for Nights 3–4, Tilcara for Nights 5–6 and Salta for Night 7. Arrival and departure are already included in the eight days. An overnight flight before arrival is outside this regional accommodation count.
Two nights in each valley base.
Final night in the departure city.
02
Altitude
Let symptoms change the plan
Altitude illness is possible even when an itinerary looks gradual. Do not continue higher with symptoms; worsening symptoms call for descent and medical help. Seek individual advice before travel when relevant. Hornocal and the salt-flat approach need their own assessment beyond the overnight-town plan.
No guaranteed acclimatisation timetable.
Use the linked altitude guide before high outings.
03
Driving
Keep the transfers in daylight
A car provides flexibility but does not remove mountain-road conditions, summer rain or the need for rest. Check current route information and choose overnight parking with the accommodation. A driver can make more sense if the scenery is the purpose and nobody wants to concentrate on the road.
Confirm the actual route before leaving.
Do not add remote detours by default.
04
Without a car
Separate town links from outings
Use current bus services for the towns they actually connect, allowing for terminals and luggage. A town-to-town ticket does not include a remote viewpoint or the return from a trailhead. Arrange those separately and keep enough margin for the last connection.
Recheck timetables near travel.
Use local transport for specific excursions.
05
Culture
Visit with attention
Markets, churches and community spaces are living places. Ask before photographing people, buy work because it interests you and respect local access requests. At archaeological sites, use the interpretation to distinguish original fabric, reconstruction and later monuments.
Choose one museum for a proper visit.
Let a meal or conversation take time.
06
Season
Expect the route to change
Summer rain can affect roads and walking routes; winter brings colder nights and different daylight. Carry layers, sun protection and a simple offline plan. Reorder outings around current conditions rather than treating a clear-weather photograph as a promise for your dates.
Check local conditions in each base.
Keep the highest outing optional.

Purmamarca beneath its coloured mountain landscape.
Let Jujuy stay with you
More than a passing view.
The coloured hills are a striking introduction. Time in the towns gives the journey its substance: a square after the busiest hours, a museum that changes how you see the landscape, and a meal you did not have to hurry.
