Villa Traful

Evening light reaches across the lake. A piece of driftwood holds the shore in place. Beyond the main lakes road, Traful asks for a little more journey and rewards a slower stay.

The RP65 approach and return

Decide whether the detour earns its time

Stay after the day visitors leave.

Villa Traful is a small lakeside settlement within Nahuel Huapi National Park, reached by leaving the main north–south lakes corridor. Its attraction is the combination of clear water, forest and village scale, rather than a large collection of organised sights. The submerged forest is its best-known excursion, but the lakefront and ordinary time outdoors can be just as important to the stay. We suggest two or three nights when you want to include Traful properly. A day visit can work, but it needs a realistic road plan and a clear reason for making the detour. Do not add it merely because the map makes it appear close to a Seven Lakes itinerary.

  1. 01
Choose Traful when the setting is enough

The strongest reason to stay is wanting to spend time beside this particular lake. A boat outing, a local walk and an afternoon near the accommodation can make a complete day. If your holiday depends on a wide choice of restaurants, frequent services and a different large excursion every morning, compare the larger bases first. Traful offers a different kind of stay, and is more rewarding when that is the one you want.

  2. 02
Give the approach a place in the itinerary

RP65 connects the village with the main routes on either side, and ongoing road works mean older accounts of the surface and driving time can be unreliable. Check the route you will actually use before leaving, including the return or onward section. Arriving with daylight and room for a delay makes the first evening more enjoyable. Treat the drive as part of the visit rather than an inconvenience to squeeze between other plans.

  3. 03
Choose accommodation around the everyday stay

Look at the relationship between the property, lake access and places to eat. A secluded cabin may be ideal when you want time at the accommodation; a more central address can make shorter visits easier. Ask about the practical details for your dates, including meals and transport. A view across the water does not necessarily mean a simple walk down to it, and the ordinary evening arrangements matter in a small destination.

The lake and submerged forest

Look beneath the surface.

Lake Traful holds the destination's most unusual sight: a submerged forest, where trees remain standing beneath the water. A licensed boat outing offers a way to understand this landscape beyond the photographs, with conditions and visibility shaping the experience. Compare what the trip actually includes and how long it spends on the water. The clear shallows along the shoreline are beautiful in their own right, but they should not be mistaken for a guarantee of seeing every underwater detail on a particular day. Leave the outing flexible enough for the lake's conditions, then keep the rest of the day open for the shore.

  1. 01
Choose the experience you are booking

A boat excursion and a specialist diving activity are different plans. Ask the authorised operator what is included, what conditions are needed and how changes are handled. Choose the activity that matches your experience and the reason you want to go.

  2. 02
Let the lake determine the best timing

Visibility and the comfort of a boat trip depend on conditions. Speak with the operator before fixing another outing immediately afterwards. A stay of more than one night gives you more room to make a sensible choice.

Local walks and small details

Let the shore hold your attention.

Traful rewards looking closely: weathered wood beside the water, changing colour in the shallows and the outline of the far mountains. A slower shoreline morning can sit alongside Cascada Coa Có, the selected land-based alternative to a submerged-forest boat excursion. It is a forest walk to a waterfall, not a boat landing; use Coa Có and Villa Traful visitor information to orient that separate outing. Choose the specific route and current access before setting out. The point is to spend time in the forest and beside the water, with enough attention left for what you notice along the way.

  1. 01
Ask for the current local walk

Get the route, starting point and current condition for the outing you intend to do. Nearby names can refer to separate approaches, and an older description may not reflect closures or changes. Choose a walk that leaves a comfortable return.

  2. 02
Keep one unfilled stretch of the day

A lakefront pause, a meal and an afternoon near your accommodation are part of the value of staying. If every available hour becomes another drive, the visit loses the quieter rhythm that made the detour appealing.

The route to a smaller base

Make the detour worth a night.

Traful can connect a journey between larger Lake District bases, but the route needs deliberate planning. The western approach leaves the Seven Lakes corridor, while the eastern connection leads towards the Traful–Limay confluence and RN237. Those alternatives are not interchangeable shortcuts. In 2026, the provincial government continued reporting work on RP65, making fresh road information especially useful. Choose the approach that fits your previous night and the onward direction, then give the village enough time to be more than a stop at the end of a long drive.

  1. 01
Check the actual section you will drive

Ask about current access, construction and surface conditions for the western or eastern approach you intend to use. A general statement that the route is being paved does not establish that the whole journey is finished or unrestricted.

  2. 02
    Avoid a crowded transfer day

A full Seven Lakes drive with multiple stops and a substantial Traful detour can leave little time in the village. Choose fewer stops, add a night or keep Traful for a longer trip. The extra stay should improve the journey, not merely lengthen the route.

Plan the northern part of the journey

Keep the village visit simple

Give the detour room.

A useful Traful plan begins with the road, the accommodation and the lake conditions. Once those are understood, leave space for the quieter parts of the stay.

01

Two or three nights

Choose a stay with a full day.

Two nights provide an arrival, a full village-and-lake day and an onward journey. Three nights give more flexibility for a boat outing and a separate walk. One night can still be worthwhile on a carefully planned route, but it leaves little room if road or weather conditions change the available time.

  • Give the submerged-forest outing its own suitable window.
  • Keep the arrival evening uncomplicated and close to the accommodation.
02

Road access

Treat old driving estimates cautiously.

RP65 is undergoing a changing programme of road improvements. Recent provincial information still described gravel on part of the eastern approach, so do not assume that a general paving announcement means every section is complete. Confirm the current condition of the route you will use and allow for works or delays.

  • Check both the arrival and onward sections before committing to a through-route.
  • Use a suitable organised transfer if you prefer not to manage the road yourself.
03

The boat outing

Choose an authorised service.

The submerged forest is a specialist lake visit, rather than a sight that can be understood simply by stopping anywhere along the shore. Compare authorised operators, departure arrangements and what is visible on the proposed outing. A diving experience adds its own requirements and should be planned specifically, not treated as an automatic upgrade to a boat trip.

  • Ask about visibility and weather changes before paying.
  • Keep another part of the stay available if the lake conditions are unsuitable.
04

Walks and viewpoints

Follow current park access.

Choose local walks using current information from the village and park. Arroyo Blanco, Coa Co and Arroyo Catarata belong to particular routes, not a single continuous casual stroll. Check current park trail notices before setting out and stay on authorised access.

  • Confirm the named route, distance and return time.
  • Choose a shorter outing when the day also includes a significant drive.
05

Seasons and services

Plan for the small scale.

Warmer months lend themselves to lake and forest time; cooler seasons can make the accommodation and meals a larger part of the stay. Service patterns may differ with the season. Confirm the essentials that matter to your visit, especially transport, a particular outing and where you will eat if staying away from the village centre. Before setting out on a walk, check Nahuel Huapi trail information for park notices and confirm the named route's current access.

  • Choose the property for the holiday you intend to have there.
  • A quieter season is appealing when you are comfortable with a simpler daily plan.
06

The onward stay

Return to the main corridor deliberately.

Villa La Angostura adds a broader choice of village and forest outings, while San Martín de los Andes opens Lago Lácar and the southern Lanín area. Bariloche offers the larger city base and southern park departures. Choose the next stay according to the experiences you still want, rather than adding each destination because it appears on the same map.

  • Leave enough time in the next base to enjoy the arrival evening.
  • Use the regional guide to decide where an extra night adds the most.
